VW POLO RECOVERED FOLLOWING HI-JACKING

On Friday 11 February 2011, a signal was received in Soshanguve from a white VW Polo that was hi-jacked in Mabopane in November 2010. The vehicle did not have a registration number, as the owner only had the vehicle for 4 days when he was hi-jacked. Tracetec Recovery Agents responded immediately to the signal and proceeded to the area. A further signal was received from the Pretoria CBD.

The agents then proceeded towards the CBD on the R80 and spotted the vehicle travelling in the opposite direction. The agents then followed the vehicle while contacting the SAPS for assistance. The driver of the stolen Polo was travelling at speeds of up to 170km/hour towards Shoshanguve along the R80. He suddenly took the Amandasig off ramp and drove into the Wonderpark shopping centre. It became clear that he had detected the recovery agents. He drove to entrance 3 and parked the car and disappeared into the shopping centre. He re-appeared a few minutes later, having changed his clothes, got back into the car, proceeded out of the shopping centre at high speed and managed to evade the recovery agents.

The SAPS arrived on the scene and a SAPS helicopter located the car on Doreen Street in Karen Park. The helicopter forced the vehicle off the road and the driver was promptly arrested by the SAPS. The suspect was a member of the Tswane Metro Police and had recently been promoted.
