HI-JACKED TRUCK RECOVERED UNDER SUSPICIOUS CIRCUMSTANCES

An Isuzu F8000 truck loaded with cargo was apparently hi-jacked on 22 November. The owner reported the truck as missing, but refused to provide any further details regarding the circumstances surrounding the loss of the truck. Tracetec quickly located the vehicle at the Phumelani toll gate and notified the SAPS and Traffic Department. The Gauteng Traffic Department spotted the truck parked in the truck stop area of the Petro Port on the N1 north in Midrand but the driver was nowhere in sight. Tracetec recovery agents, after observing the scene for two hours with no movement/activity, approached the truck and found the cab open and the keys hidden under the carpet. The cargo was missing, as were the driver and the crew. The owner of the truck indicated initially that he was on his way to open a case of vehicle theft but the case was never opened and he could not be reached again later. The SAPS refused to impound the vehicle without a case number, so Tracetec opened the case on behalf of the owner. The truck was impounded and the case is under investigation. The SAPS are also looking into the suspicious circumstances surrounding the case.
